A drink that originated after World War I, seeing as the name refers to a motorcycle attachment for transporting passengers. Legend has it the drink originated after an English army captain, stationed in France during the first World War, arrived back from the battlefield transported in a sidecar and needed a stiff drink to warm himself. The drink is said to be created in either London or Paris, but sources note the popularity of this drink in both cities around the same time, being the 1920’s and 1930’s. Harry McElhone’s book ‘Harry’s ABC of mixing Cocktails’ is one of the first mentions of this recipe at a 1:1:1 ratio. This style is sometimes referred to as ‘French Style’. The English version (2:1:1 ratio) is much more common nowadays, favoring a double portion of Cognac to the other two ingredients, making this drink essentially a Cognac Daisy.
