Many stories surround the creation of the Mojito, but most people seem to agree that its history lies with the concoction named ‘El Draque’. This is a drink named after Sir Francis Drake, an English privateer who gave his crew a mix of aguardiente, lime and mint to drink to combat the rise of scurvy on the open waters.
After ‘El Draque’ became widely known, people started experimenting with it. Most notably, the use of white rum and soda water which we now know as a Mojito. This drink was popularized by Don Facundo Bacardi to promote his own rum and by Ernest Hemingway who loved his cuban rums and drank either daiquiris or mojitos.
